When we at Third Coast Events, Inc. talk about true leaders, there are always some universal, hallmark traits that we identify with powerful leadership. What makes a true leader? Think about someone you know who exhibits great leadership; chances are they employ many of the tips listed here:
- Real Leadership Means Leading Yourself. A great part of leadership is mentoring others and leading by example, but the most influential leaders also know how to lead themselves. They become a working part of their organization and in doing so, they motivate others.
- Don’t be a Monarch. We’ve all known leaders who exhibit positional power, but not the true transformational aspects of thoughtful leadership. Be careful not to lead from on high. Opt instead for engaging and guiding others through example and influence rather than authority.
- Be Open to New Ways of Doing Things. “We’ve always done it this way,” can be a real innovation-killer. True leaders are open to rethinking, retooling or challenging the status quo.
- Show Genuine Appreciation. Avoid a gratuitous pat on the back for a job well done. When you can, augment praise with real rewards like vacation bonuses, monetary awards, or some other thoughtful gesture. It will motivate and inspire not only the recipient, but others who see firsthand the value their employer places on performance.
At Third Coast Events, Inc., leadership exists in all levels of our organization. We challenge ourselves, our team members and our clients to rise to the opportunities of true leadership by following these tips and exhibiting the behaviors associated with them.
